Re: Europeans are no more happy about their illegal immigrants than Americans.

Actually, Europeans are unhappy about their legal immigrants as well.... Nonwhite immigrants, that is. White immigrants from Russia, Ukraine, Romania,..., whether legal or illegal don't upset them. Again, I still cling to my analysis that Europe struggles to remain a multicultural white monolith whereas the US has come to view itself, if grudgingly, as a multiracial monoculture:

Message 21349504
Message 21812798;

I guess although I think European countries are still more multiracial monoculture working their way to the multicultural white monolith.

After all, that's what your immigration fuss is all about: Americans fret about Latino illegals because their huge numbers challenge your Judeo-Protestant monoculture and, eventually, jeopardize your (geo)political consensus. White Americans can live with ethnic minorities so long as... they remain "minorities"!

No, its more about race and economic/class. Many of the Latinos come from poor farming areas......they stand out like sore thumbs in American cities. We pay to educate their children and provide them with other services but they rarely pay taxes. And there are a host of other problems.......like car insurance and accidents......they rarely have it so your insurance company ends up picking up the bill even when the accident is not your fault.

The cultural differences are significant and the racial issue just compounds the problem. Where there are less cultural differences like with the Irish emigres in Boston, the conflict is less although there is still a problem.

I still contend that the US has absorbed many more different cultures within its boundaries successfully than Europe has.

Europe's problem is racial --just think of the ongoing takeover attempt on Arcelor by Indian-born Lakshmi Mittal. If the latter had been a white American Bilderberger, the whole matter would already be settled and forgotten. Of course, intra-European M&As prove also difficult because the EU's big countries don't want to see rivals encroaching on their capitalistic/corporate turfs.... It has more to do with an internecine tug-of-war within the European ruling class.<?I>

Its the same here too. The originating culture here is European. We have many of the same attitudes about race that Europeans have. The only difference is we had to deal with those issues much earlier than Europeans did. When it comes to race, I contend Europe is where the US was in the 1960s.

Re: As for legal immigration, quotas in this country are much higher than they are in Europe.

Well, it's both easy and innocuous for the US to boast "record immigration quotas" when it's safely separated from other continents by two oceans! No matter how lax your immigration laws are, it's unlikely that sub-Saharan Africans, on their exodus to a better life, will attempt to cross the Atlantic towards Florida instead of the Mediterranean towards Spain! You don't have to care much about Africans, Arabs and Asians flocking to your gates: airline passengers travelling without a passport or a proper document must be "travelled" back at the carrier's expenses....

That's true. However, we do get are fair share of Asians on boats coming in through Mexico.

Besides, the fact that the US has genuinely embraced multiracialism makes it easier for US corporations to hire highly skilled, white-collar workers:

Contrariwise, Europeans can't conceive of a computer/finance workplace as other than a lily-white sanctuary.... Bottom line: Europe gets the bums, and the US the brains.

I doubt that's true. There have got to be enough multi racial brains to go around.
