John, most folks have a pretty strong level of care as well as shared curiosity over their friends, that a friend would notice if something were wrong.

Also, I think the majority of people that have done something wrong probably didn't realize it. If someone does something wrong due to a lack of awareness, it is quite likely they will speak about what they did not realizing what they did was wrong, so there's an opportunity to educate there.

RE: "How many people "fudge" items on their taxes"

Probably not many. A person would lose their contacts and friends overnight if they did.

There are small clues in people's behavior that are leading indicators of future troubles - these are the people to avoid or educate. You said most people can't tell if their friend is a crook, but I think most would intuitively sense it, whether through inconsistencies or other subtle signals. People are smarter than what you give them credit for.

People can sense when a person is going to be a problem - someone that throws lawsuits around for example. I have a friend that was hit by another car and my friend got physically injured yet she never sued - you can bet I'd trust her before someone that has a history of lawsuits. When a VC does due diligence, one of the questions they ask the team is if anyone has ever had any past lawsuit. Business insurance agents ask this too. People are creatures of habit.
