What would you propose, instead, to keep them from entering illegally? Or wouldn't you prevent them?

As I just typed to Dale, I've always thought of this particular facet of the immigration issue, to the degree I thought about it at all, as an economic issue. The best way to address it was to address the supply/demand structure. I'm rethinking.

As for the fence, I think its symbolic importance is paramount. It sends the wrong messages. And if Friedman's flat world argument has some cogency, one portion of it that does is the reduction of the importance of borders.
