I guess I would prefer them to require everyone to have insurance then to require we provide free treatment to those that don't.

I don't see why you prefer those who can't afford insurance getting free insurance instead of the free treatment they get now. Do you think that will cost less?

Knew a guy who worked at CAT. Union job. Got hammered every Saturday night and every Sunday morning went to the emergency room to get 2 Excedrin. The insurance paid the $60, this was back in the '70s. Wouldn't buy a bottle of them, couldn't give them to him, by God he had insurance and it was gonna pay.
