Good governance, the ability to appoint competent people to positions of government and the ability to properly analyze problem areas should be a primary focus. The negative campaign already exists by the very folly and nature of the Bush Administration and the lapdog behavior of Congress.

The key populist issues are economic. People are worried about outsourcing jobs overseas, stagnant wages amid strong stock prices and ever more bloated CEO compensation, escalating corporate attacks on pensions and health benefits, etc. These worries will escalate exponentially when the next bear market and/or recession hits. But strong DLC ties to big business pretty much preclude a serious Democratic alternative to the GOP on these issues IMHO.
