It is a circle that needs to be broken for sure. Yes, the spanish treated the indiginous people badly, but who didn't in those days? We had slavery in the us until 1865. In alaska the tlinget kept the aleuts as slaves. Pick any country on earth and prior to the 1900's and someone was taking advantage of someone everywhere. Indians keep other indains as slaves. Poverty and ignorance is a delima of sorts for the liberal. We understand the cause of behavior, but how does one deal with the behavior spawned by ignorance? Massive education worldwide, in my opinion is essential to mans survival. Asia is catching up quickly becasue their culture, for some reason I do not understand, highly values education. But they really do not have an anti intellectual religion to deal with like catholicism. Toaism, confusionism and buddism all are basically very intellectual. UC Berkeley registers over 50% asia freshmen every year and they are only about 5% of the population. They come out of the jungles of asia and bop their way into berkeley barely able to speak english. Look at Japan, most highly educated people on earth. They are 60 million people living on a rock totally destroyed in 2nd world war, horrible culture of shintoism and they shook it all off in 30 years to become the second largest economy on earth all through education and a very successful democracy. I think the catholic church in south American has greatly contributed to their slow uptake in education. And the chinese are now on a tear becasue they are educating their populace so fast!
