blandbutmarvelous re the military

They are aware that an attack on Iran in the current circumstances would be a catastrophic error. Nothing is going to happen to deter Iran from achieving it's nuclear goal. We have to forget the BS about spreading democracy in the ME and decide what our course of action will be if we have to have the oil to survive. Rethinking our energy strategy and getting the military in a position to go after what we need will take time and a new administration or two.

Yes it very likely that US may do a Gulf of Toiken or 9-11 type of operation in Gulf and blame it on Iran to start a crazy war.
But it will have its back burned while all chicken hawks and neo-con lackeys write glowingly in NY Times, WS journals and all other rags in US.
Glory be with us!.
Blair the Poodle has already said he does n't want to fetch bones any more for the cowboy.
The question is what will Russia and China do?

And you are overestimating Iran and underestimating the United States.

I have not said we will attack Iran. I don't know if we will or not. What I've said here is that if Iran makes the mistake of acting on belief in its own rhetoric, the United States will respond and certainly has the means and capacity to do so. The only real question in that eventuality would be the attitude of the American public, and what I've said in that regard is that American public opinion is responsive to events.

Finally, if this administration, or any other, actually DID order our military to take action against Iran, for whatever reason, our military would do so. That's how our nation is constituted. Any military officers who refused would promptly be relieved. That is how our military is constituted. Any retired military generals who wanted to piss and moan about it in hopes of becoming celebrities would still remain retired military generals, i.e., just one of the typical and inevitable by-products of massive military spending.
