17% with first 40k tax free seems in the ballpark to me. That means a family with 100k of income would pay an EFFECTIVE federal rate of about 10%, about what its been my experience most pay today but WITHOUT having to go through the gyrations of calculating. As to FICA, Medicare, I dont see how it can be reduced, considering the deficit coming up in those programs if anything it might go UP, BUT that would happen REGARDLESS of what the federal rate on income is. As to State taxes, thats something you have to settle locally by voting out the spendrift politicians. We cant tailor a federal program around a state program. Here in FLA we have NO STATE INCOME TAX yet we have A SUPLUS so large that we have sales tax holidays and the like, while they are SUCKING WIND in states like California and New England states, I say its cause of WASTEFUL LIBERAL SPENDING. jdn
