OT: Crossy, you need to go to Belize.

Not just because it's a great country to visit -- the world's 2nd longest barrier reef great for kayaking and diving, you can drink the water, they speak English, it's as multicultural as Vancouver -- but also because this tiny country is home to no fewer than seven types of wild cats, more than any other country.

The best news is that the felines have a good chance of survival, as Belize has caught on to ecotourism and the environment. If you fly over the Guatemala/Belize border it is clearly defined from the air, jungle on the Belizean side and decrepit fields that used to be jungle on the Guatemalan side.

Of course you are unlikely to see a cat in the wild, but there is a very good zoo/environmental centre where you can see some of them up close, if seeing cats in a cage doesn't depress you too much. During my visit to the zoo, at one point I had the experience of having an eight-foot snake draped around my shoulders while a large tarantula crawled around on my hand. Yes, I lack phobias.

I may just retire to Belize someday.
