i am speaking anecdotally. just think about all the "genius" investors with newsletters bashing energy and touting gold and gold stocks. i believe there are more touts of gold stocks than any other market sector. it attracts touts like shiat attracts flies.

as for low institutionalized owners of GFI, maybe there are particular reasons or more likely Yahoo Finance is missing a bunch. NEM is heavily owned at 68% institutionalized and MoFo's. FCX float is 99% institutionalized!

so you may think my anecdote is crazy, but i think i'm just seeing the facts for what they are...

I don't know if popularity is the right word, but I am convinced the boyz and prop desks are definitely renting gold for a trade right now. That's going to be part of the problem, as I doubt they have any loyalty to it whatsoever.
