"Then what proposal would you proffer to 'encourage'
the auto manufacturers to produce a more efficient
fleet ."

The government should do nothing its not their responsibilty to control prices.

What I would do is buy a foreign car that has the options Im looking for. "leading" those companies to provide more and better upgrades which I will tell my friends make a lot of sense. And so on and so on.

This will result in either the BK of US manufacturers or a restructureing of their operations.

The current stratedgy of Ford and GM is.....And I CANT BELEIEVE IM ACTUALLY WRITING THIS..... is to convince the public that SUV type vehicles ARE fuel efficent. This was the announced strategy in the previous earnings report. Now in someways thats true. the Smaller SUVs report around 20 miles to the gallon on the highway and I dont think a Camry or Accound or Taurus get signifcanlty more. Even the so called high milage cars are in the 30 range for most "average" cars not the 50 60 or 70 we say back in the 70's.

So I think the whole marketing depts of Ford and GM should be fired. Bite the bullet and produce Hybreds now. This would be an internal business decision not an edict from the govt. How about one that gets say 60 MPG,Charge consumers though the nose until competition catches up.

Let the Free market decide what they should do and if the free market wants to spend $100 to fill up the tank, I say great! getting the government involved is just folly.

BTW all the talk on plug ins and electric as far as costs are concerned are somewhat suspect with me. WE have seen many stats that say we are currently near capicity for electric output now. In CA. electicy is pretty expensive. I dont no how much "juice" I need to fill up, but first it wont be cheap. Second if we need more plants that wont be cheap. next NIMBY makes it much more difficult and finally what do you think electric companies use to power up the generators. Oil? Natural gas? Want to bring back the Nukes?

Let the all these bubbles play out unhelped, in the end we will all be better off.
