It's not the MTBE that is the concern. Non ethanol gas tends to leave sediment and water in the storage tanks over the years. One or two tank fulls shouldn't be a problem. Ethanol picks up the sludge and sediment so the tanks need to be clean when they switch to ethanol.

There is not enough ethanol, according to the refineries. The relaxation of ethanol standards will prevent shortages of gasoline this summer. Of course, I am only going by the comments being made on cnbc. However, the distribution of ehtanol is very ineefiecient right now as it is delivered via trucks and ril cars. No pipelines yet. I think the governement is going to make sure they make every effort to make gas available without any shortages this summer.
