I don't know... the real players buy dollars on balance daily. Traders are all beside the point IMHO.

I agree... it can go anywhere, especially if some CB decides to abuse some speculators.

Some truth there though I still believe the vast majority believe the $US is immune to a full fledged crisis.

Now consider ownership. $US ownership is ubiquitous, there are so many $ out there it is hard for any sizeable entity not to own a lot of them. Gold ownership is still unusual and in the US still considered eccentric. That is what is important. JMO.
