>>It is not realistic to publish prior aliases without first giving users the opportunity to decline for whatever reason they may have, including but not limited to previously using their real name.

I would consider previously using one's real name a good reason for not giving their prior aliases history in most cases but not all. For example, if Westergaard starts posting again, I think we should know it is Westergaard because he has become a public figure.

If Jack-the-ripper who hasn’t posted for a year or two starts posting again, I want to know it is Jack-the-ripper not cowgirl707. In addition, there are times when I want to search peoplemarks for an individual. Lot of good that does if that person has changed their alias. What if Cheeky Kid came back from the dead as Lucy, would it have had the same significance? I think not. In an online community, if you separate the aliases from the reputation then the aliases really doesn’t mean much!

Especially, I do not think changing one's alias for the purpose of creating a new reputation on SI is a justifiable reason for not giving the prior aliases history. Over time one comes to know who can be trusted and who can't be trusted. Personally, I think SI lost a lot of credibility when it started letting people for no reason change their identity online without also allowing us to know who they previously where.

The next time Anthony@Pacific posts on SI, I certainly want to know it is him not “maryjane”!
