I think it is the mechanical hardware that is keeping the price above $100. That type of drive requires the case as well as the hand assembly.

I think the answer will be wafer-sized arrays of flash memory providing 150GB or so storage, and no moving parts except for perhaps the keyboard. These could be assembled and tested by machine. They could be close to disposable.
