"I am aware of the fact that HW incumbency is of lesser importance in the PC/server business"

In the server business, most companies like to evaluate a new architecture for a year or more before switching over to ensure their software runs properly. Which is why the adoption rate of Opteron was glacial at first, but then accelerated pretty swiftly.

Al, I see what you mean now. But the "incumbency mentality" has usually been Intel's domain. The old slogan, "No one got fired for choosing IBM" has now turned into "No one got fired for choosing Intel."

I don't see that slogan turning into "No one got fired for choosing AMD." They won market share with technical superiority, but unlike Intel, AMD has to maintain the technical superiority because it's just as easy for customers to switch back.
