McCain has created an image of moderation that really is not demonstrated by his voting record or anything else. He is actually rather conservative in his voting patterns. I think his Viet Nam War POW status automatically gives him a lot of sympathy appeal by Americans hungry for a hero figure. Also, people see him as a straight talker, which is debateable; he might just be a really slick talker, as his swing from Republican maverick to party insider over the past few years demonstrates. I think it comes down to the fact that a lot of moderates have generally supported Republicans over the years and they see McCain as the old type of Republican that they can support. We'll know McCain is full of crap if he suddendly finds GOD and starts going on a religious kick. That's about the only thing he has going for him, that he's not some kooky religious right wing politician. McCain is probably the biggest obstacle facing the Democrats from taking back the White House in 2008. McCain makes it a close race and could win with a good campaign.
