"But they might be even more motivated to actively oppose Ahmadninejad and the clerics if they see the potential of any economic progress undermined by his irrational radicalism."

If their economy falls apart ahmadinejad blames the US and the students get nationalist on us and move more in lockstep with him. What is needed is economic deteorization based on what Ahmadninejad does. So it may be best to avoid sanctions right now and let events bring down this regime and this unholy alliance between students and clerics based on nuclear nationalism. Iranian students at this time are nothing more than cappucino drinkers. Limosine liberals. They need the state in turmoil based on the failure of the regime to even begin to get up enough courage to challenge the rulers. Right now the nuke talk and the caffeine are enough to buy them off.
