The Europeans are quite capable of trading oil in Euro's themselves, and the Iranaians would be exstatic to trade there. As I said, picture a Swiss Bank with billions in Iran in order to trade oil in Euro's instead of just trading in London in dollars and crosshedging out of the dollar.

I think you're missing the analogy. No one is saying that IRAN can't just demand Euro for their oil... in fact, I think they do. BUT, that doesn't mean anyone is going to come to their country to trade oil. In your analagy fish have jet aircraft and can fly to any puddle on the planet.
