People adjust their weekly gasoline budgets to a level of tolerance. When gas cracked the $1.50 barrier and it cost $20 to fill up, it shocked us but we got used to it. Then we had $2.00 gas and got used to $25-30 fillups. Recently, we're at $3.00 and $40. We'll get used to it and the outrage will fade.

That's why adding taxes onto it won't fuel the impetus for alt sources. IMO.
