I don't know that much about ME writing- I've only read a few ME writers, like Mahfouz, and I read them translated, but one thing that has always struck me is that their written communication is much more "flowery" (for want of a better word) than Western communications. It reminds me of Elizabethan writing more than any modern Western style. I don't know how accurate we could be in parsing their word choices for hidden meanings when 1. they write differently than we do and 2. their words are translated.
