Moroni was the Angel Moroni, who is said to have appeared to Joseph Smith and provided him with the plates, which Smith then claims to have translated.

I think they were a lost tribe of Israel that came. That has run into some trouble just lately with DNA testing of our earliest folks here I think I remember reading.
