They DO have us because of Israel... as well as other meddling in the Middle East. So what? They've got oil, we need oil, it makes our economy run. Big risk. Israel is a very strong strategic partner, right next door. Look, a premise you bring up quite often is that the US should reduce its dependence on foreign oil because that will reduce dependence on unstable ME countries, and I guess, therefore make their citizens less inclined to blow up Americans (or something like that). My point is that the ME anti-American sentiment is not caused by US purchase of their oil, it is primarily caused by US support for Israel. In fact, since numerous other large nations (China, Russia, Japan, etc.) buy lots of ME oil, and the Arabs don't seem to hate the people of those countries, you can conclude that oil is not the cause of anti-American feelings among Arabs at all. The main cause of anti-American feelings among Arabs is US support for Israel. What is strategic about the support for Israel, when it produces the anti-American feelings amongst the Arab population? Israel isn't even close to the oil. And when the US supported the foundation of Israel back in 1947/8 the Arab oil deposits were not even a major factor in world supply - oil had nothing to do with it. If oil were the driver you can bet your bottom the US would have advocated putting Israel on the strip of land between Kuwait and Dubai (where all the oil is located). Support for Israel is idealogical based on support for a so-called like minded people under a democracy surrounded by authoritarian givenrments.
