re: Look, a premise you bring up quite often is that the US should reduce its dependence on foreign oil because that will reduce dependence on unstable ME countries, and I guess, therefore make their citizens less inclined to blow up Americans (or something like that).

It will make us much more likely to ignore them, as we do most of the rest of the world... and they would like that, as opposed to, say, the Iraq war. Which they probably find intrusive... to say the least.

The key difference in our opinions is that you think we support Israel, more than any other country in the world, just because we like them. (Egypt is number 2, I suppose it's because we like them almost as well).

I say it's because we want strong strategic allies in the Middle East, because if the world oil supply broke really bad we would be thrown into a deep depression. Our economy in ruin. And having a nuke power in our debt in the region is a very big stick.

Let's agree to disagree, I don't see your Snow White view of the world changing to anything approaching realpolitik.
