Like your slippery slope comment. Since when is civilization a slippery slope? Or, for that matter, a bad thing?

Your concept of the "collective good." is probably distorted by the strong authoritarian model of religious institutions. When the collective has checks and balances then the individual has more freedom than if the individual had to defend himself against all commers.

(By defend I don't mean just fisticufs, but defend from being exploited, abused, marginalized, or forced to conform to the majority).
