To me the fascinating question is why the most charismatic politicians - Reagan and Clinton - couldn't groom successors who could carry on their crusade and solidify a lasting majority behind their cause.

Both Reagan and Clinton chose VPs for politically expedient reasons, who became their heirs by default. Bad idea. Maybe that's why Bush picked a VP with no political ambitions anyway.
