US woman and two Arabs to get 40 lashes for being drunk

Doha: An American woman and two Arab youths have been sentenced to 40 lashes each for drinking alcohol, a local daily paper said here yesterday.

The woman accompanied by a Qatari national had a quarrel with the two Arabs in a restaurant, prompting the outlet's staff to call the police, the Peninsula said.

Blood samples of the woman and the other two Arab nationals confirmed traces of alcohol while the Qatari's test was negative. The Upper Criminal Court issued its verdict on Tuesday acquitting the Qatari and sentencing the other three to 40 lashes.

Consumption of alcohol is prohibited to Muslims under Islamic law, although Qatar allows consumption to both Qatari nationals and expatriates in five-star hotel restaurants and bars. Expatriates with a valid alcohol licence can also purchase alcoholic drinks from authorised stores.

Severe

However, although the drinking of alcoholic beverages is allowed under some conditions, if the blood test of an individual involved in a quarrel or accident tests positive for alcohol, the punishment can be severe.

Local court reports show that consumption of alcohol is growing among Qatari nationals and expatriates alike.

The Upper Criminal Court two days ago sentenced a Qatari national to 40 lashes after he was found guilty of causing an accident while under the influence of alcohol.

According to an editorial from Al Sharq newspaper, an increasing number of families are facing problems due to the consumption of alcohol by husbands.

An increasing number of workers also obtain alcohol through illegal distributors and hide them at their labour camps.

In the meantime the local authorities are engaged in combating the illegal traffic of alcohol through the country's entry ports.

"Let me put it this way. Had Gore won in 2000, he would have lost his re-election bid in 2004."

I seriously doubt that. Our economy would be humming WITHOUT tax cuts for the wealthy, and 9/11, if it ever happened, would be in the past already, instead of being constantly dredged up mined for support.
