Absolutely. Huge issue. I don't think anyone knows how the numbers cut on this one. There are industries that will be whacked; costs will definitely go up- but how much, and which costs? Will there be more jobs for Us citizens? Or will prices go up, and the jobs disappear with slowing demand caused by rising prices? I get the feeling people aren't even trying to tackle these issues. I know they are complex, but that's all the more reason to try to get some handle on them. I hate the idea that the government is just flailing in a sea of possibilities no one has taken the trouble to understand.

They can't put illegals into union jobs, the unions won't let them.

Depends on the union. Some oppose illegal immigration, or legalizing illegals, or any great increase in legal immigration. Others have very different opinions.

Service Employees International Union (SEIU—labor)
"SEIU was a driving force behind the AFL-CIO's decision to support legalization for hard-working, tax-paying immigrants. SEIU represents more immigrant workers than any other union, and has been a leading voice for immigration reform that rewards work and improves conditions for all working people."
