The reason they would do this is that they need to bookmark the thread to use advanced search on it.

That's a real nuisance and you're right--it does distort the data.

I don't think there's too much to be concluded from numbers of bookmarks. There's at least one thread on Dale's list that I know of that's dead as a doornail and has been for years but still has lots of bookmarks.

Why would you want to search a thread you don't read, post to or agree with (whether or not you're banned)?

I can see reasons for a stocks thread, maybe it has useful information or similar, but why an opinion thread? What would you be searching for, and why?
