I made a misstatement. The average American wage is $34,197.63 (for 2004). The median American wage was $23,355.83, with half of America making less, and half making more. I imagine most Americans would guess a LOT more than that.

The chart here really demonstrates how American's wages were doing better than they had in a LONG time in 97, 98 and 99 - then actually declined in real dollars during the early Bush years. I think this explains why most Americans are underwhelmed by Bushenomics.
