Firewire drive.

Too bad that not many people partition. It's saved me numerous times.

Last night my printer wasn't responding. I really needed it. After checking for obvious problems I booted to my partition. Printer worked fine.

So the partition immediately let me determine whether it was a hardware or software problem. Once I had that figured out I booted back and found the problem.

>>The one book I have, David Pogue's book, suggests that partitioning one's hard drive requires backing up everything, then erasing the hard disk and starting over.

Any other ideas?<<

John -

I believe that Boot Camp includes a software utility that allows you to partition your hard drive without destroying the existing partition. There is also a nice utility called Drive Genius, from Prosoft Engineering. It enables "on-the-fly" partitioning of your Mac hard drive and does many other useful things, for a reasonable price.

FYI, Prosoft also makes a product called Data Rescue which I have used to recover files from a damaged volume. Very handy.

Both Drive Genius and Data Rescue can take a very long time to run, btw. And of course, it's always a good idea to have a backup in case something goes wrong.
