Hector got his confirmation that AMD DOES SUPPLY WORLD CLASS processors...it really doesn't even matter whether Dell actually uses them or not...I don't think Hector has shown Dell everything....June 1st should be interesting...;>))))

McMab- "I agree with others here who think this is a setup"

I certainly have thought about possible Machiavellian explanations for all this. Who knows with M. Dell, but I tremendously doubt that Otellini and Intel are in on it. This is *really* embarrassing for Intel, and Otellini's job is not secure at this point. A possible embarrassment for AMD in 9 months is not a likely strategy for someone worried about losing his job. Otellini wants some positive results and publicity *now*.

My explanations for the "Why now?" question:

1. It takes attention away from Dell's poor results.
2. Intel's 4P solution sucks, and will suck for some time.
3. The 4P segment, thanks to AMD, is growing rapidly and starting to make inroads into areas of Dell strength (2P). This wasn't the case before.
4. Customers are saying we won't stick with Dell if we can't get best in class solutions for each class of server.

I assume that Mikey talked it over with Otellini, and the AMD 4P-only solution was finalized. I assume Dell will continue to get better discounts than everyone else.

Dell and AMD had been talking for years, AMD Chief Executive Officer Hector Ruiz said Friday.

"We didn't do anything special" to win the order, Ruiz said. "They've always expressed a strong desire to have AMD inside Dell boxes and it just finally happened."

Ruiz said he is optimistic that the order will open the door for AMD to win orders from Dell for chips for PCs, Dell's largest unit.

"We have been anticipating, and we have the manufacturing strategy in place to meet that demand," Ruiz said.

I smell a rat. I agree with others here who think this is a setup.

Publically, that's a dangerous game to play- because it may get away from them.

Obviously, all the current Intel only OEM's (Sony, Toshiba, IBM in their mainstream server lines etc.) can't be in on it.

The "Dell adopts AMD" is a very very powerful story.

It'll be written up on the cover pages of industry mags everywhere (or at least very prominantly).

IT's folks will also get the message. These other OEM's will feel the pressure to rebalance their sockets with AMD (thinking along the lines of: "Boy if Dell has gone AMD- what do they know about their closest supplier- we better go AMD too").

Plus, not to mention the fact that it's extremely demoralizing to the general Intel employee.

This is not a game- at least not one setup like you are imagining. Too much potential for image damage to Intel and image boost to AMD- just by the announcement.

RE:"I conclude that this is about ego, and Otellini & Mikey Dell are trying hard to embarass Ruiz. Dell will announce that it is dropping Opteron because Intel has surpassed AMD."

I'd say there is at least a 50% chance of this happening.
Who the hell would trust Dell? They only are adding Opteron so they can stop getting their clocks cleaned by HP.

OTOH, maybe the AMD servers will sell so well they can't drop them.

welcome to the club :-))

one thing is somewhat encouraging though is that Ruiz made a point that no special deals were given to Dell....
