I think one of the reasons that diversity has been pushed since the 60’s is that the intellectual elite believe that the US will be more open to globalism and giving up some sovereignty if they can reduce nationalism to where citizens aren't too American.

I am not certain about this but i think this happened with first and second gen italians back in the day. It doesnt last more than one gen and i dont quite get the motivation of giving your kid a disadvantage in the competition for education and jobs. My college roomate was italian and he told me that you couldnt believe the hostility to education and professional or white collar employment among early italian immigrants and even some of their working class kids. Jews otoh who came at the same time got a leg up because it was always about education and professions (to a fault) for jewish kids. Asians are much the same way. But in the end we all get to the same place and i hope that mexican/american kids get there too.
