Peter, Those poor Cuban patriots were shot to pieces. That was a terrible boondoggle by someone, and like Harry Truman said "The buck stops here" which, of course, is the desk in the Oval Office.

That was mostly a hoax also...the missiles were already there, and he just wanted to flex his muscles..(sort of ala Clinton) and JFK caught Kruschev scratching his head, saying "huh, why's he doing that?"
