I dont think its a question of keeping as much as it is a security issue from possible future attacks from Arab nations. I think as peace breaks out israel would be only too happy to give this back. Thats why a regional arrangement that recognizes de facto borders for the most and addresses security worries of the israelis, while allowing the Pals to live in peace with a very real opportunity for economic progress and some measure of democracy might work. Small nation states but a larger entity. I may be just dreaming here but i see no other way to solve this problem long term.

That is very reasonable, but not what happened IMO. If, following the 6-day war Israel had clearly stated, and then implemented a buffer plan with the occupied territories, they would have had far less problems than they do now. Instead there were very vocal groups within Israel clearly bent on conquest, and the government both allowed and encouraged it. The maps I see of the West Bank are not rational.

Its the same thing I saw in southern Africa. One ethnic group has most of the power and does not take an equitable view of the other group, and only grudgingly makes concessions. Eventually demographics prevail, and with no love lost for past behavior, the first groups ends up even worse off.

Israel should clean 100% of the settlements out of the West Bank, give up all land on the eastern side so that the Pal state borders Jordan, and come to a compromise on East Jerusalem holy sites (International enclave??), then be draconian on subsequent security issues, but for Gods sake, decouple it from land. Israels behavior and problems with land and security are just like Americas problems with ME security and oil. As long as you have a clear agenda of self-interest which is at variance to your stated goals, expect problems.
