There are no religion-free zones, but there are evangelical free zones. Too many people aren't satisfied with being religious. It's like you said before about addictions. In the beginning they love god and that makes them happy ... but they get immune to that high and so have to convert others to religion before they can feel happy. After a constant exposure to that they need more religion for their high so they also find people to hate and claim that their marriage is ruined because a gay got married ... and still they become habituated to their addiction and crave more.
