Kerry did refute the lies, but he didn't call off his issues-related campaign and go to work disproving every single charge. At the time, I emailed his top guy and suggest Max Cleland run a kangaroo court whereby all the charges would be dealt with and proven to be lies, but Kerry wanted to stay on issues that mattered and didn't think the mainstream media would take the bait. Sadly, they did. Falling into a trap set by dirty tricksters, the mainstream media (and of course the rightwing media) gave those liars equal time. That was the real crime. But the press will never do this again. I think they learned their lesson. of course the rightwing media will continue to lie, spin and smear as much as they can get away with.
