Kerry's response was anemic. It was like the comparison of holding up a candle to a search light. O'Neill over powered Kerry's response and message, which was very weak.

Now if Kerry's team had been watching what was going on in the media, they would have noticed which network was running away with the ratings. Of course Fox had the ratings cornered. And we know that Fox is the mouthpiece for the administration. What happened is that Fox was putting the Smearvets up and the ratings increased. The other networks, being the rating whores that they are, followed suit. Pretty soon it was all smearvets on any channel, and then $30 million dollars worth of TV ads on top of that.

You know CNN had to kowtow to the republicans, because when they wanted to make an anouncement they started using Fox. That hurt CNN which had been the leader in the news. It legitimized Fox and took away clout from CNN. Ratings rule the media, and Fox had the ratings covered. The way they covered 9-11 and the "War on Terror" had the nation mezmerised.

Kerry's group didn't see the mountain they were up against and needed to scale. The smear overwhelmed them.

I agree that smear campaigns are difficult to mount an attack on. But I also think that if you do nothing against them it's worse than trying to get your message out about the lies.

Kerry was overwhelmed and beaten. Sure it was done by dumping load after load of crap on him and was not ethical or fair.

But there is an old saying that still holds true, All fair in love and war. And politics is war.

What more would you expect?

Kerry's still taking steps now that he should have taken two years ago. He should have staged a 30 minute show on his heroism and explained why O'Neil was a liar and what O'Neil was trying to gain, along with the rest of them. When Rove changes the game you have to beat him at the new game.
