"He's saying if the Panda's thumb was observed to somehow have evolved despite it being a hindrence, that would support his arguement"

I was saying no such thing. I said "The fact that evolution is so obviously ad hoc (for example the Panda's "thumb")..."

The panda's thumb was ad hoc. It is not a hindrance. Indeed it is necessary for survival. But it clearly evolved as an improvisation of Nature as opposed to being crafted by some form of intelligence. It is because Nature grasps immediate solutions to environmental pressures that species so often go extinct. There is no overall plan or design. There is simply survival. After a period of time this specialization traps itself. The Koala for instance is endangered because of the disappearance of eucalyptus trees which is the only food it can eat. Furthermore, it must spent most of life sleeping because the energy supplied by the leaves is so low.
