"Exactly... pretty smart, eh??"

What justifies the word "smart"?? If the Panda had a proper thumb rather than a minimalized improvisation of selection...that might be termed "smart". If 99.9% of all species had not gone EXTINCT...that might be considered "smart" as well.

"Can't natural selection be driven by consciousness/awareness/intelligence???"

It could be driven by a snowball. But there is no reason to posit either possibility. How intelligent would a creature be who failed in 99.9% of everything it lavished creative intent upon?? Where is any suggestion of such a creature? And if there is no suggested author of this "intelligence", then where is there a suggestion that awareness, reason, and will can exist apart from a brain and nervous system??

"One of the big 'problems' with a theory based on "random" evolution is the large 'gaps' in evolutionary branches yet to be 'filled in"

Why do you consider that a problem?

"So? Does extinction mean lack of intelligence??"

If someone or something designed an entire species only to fail in perpetuating itself--well...it suggests low wattage or a ridiculous premise.

"So? So does the sloth"

Exactly. Hardly evidence that either were designed for any "reason" other than sleeping and dying and then becoming extinct. As such a "reason" seems idiotic on the face of it, it leads us to consider more rational explanations.

Isn't ad hoc evolution an arguement FOR consious/aware/intelligent evolution??

No, a design implies forethought. Ad hoc solutions are a sign of random usefulness.
