<If the Panda had a proper thumb rather than a minimalized improvisation of selection...that might be termed "smart".>

But it looks like it needed that thumb to eat bamboo:

For all you know it would have become extinct even earlier.

< If 99.9% of all species had not gone EXTINCT...that might be considered "smart" as well.>

Well, it wouldn't be stupid! LOL

<It could be driven by a snowball. But there is no reason to posit either possibility.>

No reason?? Natural selection assumes some drive to survive... Human consciousness/awareness/intelligence appears to 'evolve':

<If someone or something designed an entire species only to fail in perpetuating itself--well...it suggests low wattage or a ridiculous premise. >

Who said they would be designed to fail?? You seem to be personalizing the whole process into some state of Nirvana where everyone survives and is happy or something. What's wrong with survival of the fittest... death, extinction, new life and new forms replacing the old?? It's not ridiculous at all IMO.

<Exactly. Hardly evidence that either were designed for any "reason" other than sleeping and dying and then becoming extinct.>

LOL... thanks for your opinion on their 'design'. <VBG>

<Why do you consider that a problem?>

It's not a problem, but some evolutionary scientists have doubts about proving that evolution is 'random'. That might leave open a role for consciousness/awareness/intelligence.
