Ad hoc does NOT imply there was no goal... only that if there was one, it would be for a particular case at hand without consideration of a wider application. Nor does it imply that this particular 'evolutionary example' precludes consciousness/awareness/intelligence. I would think it DOES imply that 'eating now' overrides a lot of other 'goals' that might make that thumb a hindrance. DAK
