Seems like there are two bottom line issues here. First, the banner was approved and produced and put there by the White House, who desperately wanted to convey a victorious image for the flight-suit Commander In Chief. To say that there was a finely nuanced speech underneath all the theatrics that Rove created and Bush approved is disingenuous.

They wanted to put on a show and darn tootin', they got a show.

Second, the American people don't buy the spin, not a majority of them. We keep hearing that Bush's ratings are low because his accomplishments are distorted and the message is spun the wrong way by the media and on and on. The dog ate his homework, I get it.

The guy has had five years to prove what he can and can't do on his merits. The electorate has watched carefully and rendered their verdict in the polls, both when they voted for him and now when apparently most wouldn't.

The rest is just backward looking spin games, IMHO.
