To say that there was a finely nuanced speech underneath all the theatrics that Rove created and Bush approved is disingenuous.

Bush has been very clear that he doesn't DO nuance. It's preposterous to suggest that just this one time he did. If he did, then hell would have frozen over and we wouldn't be talking about global warming.

The speech was nuanced. That's completely consistent with what you're saying---and what I'm saying for that matter.
I'm not being disingenuous.

The overall feeling to be conveyed by the visual plus the speech was victory.

Duh.

Doesn't take a media mastermind to figure that out.

But the speech text did not state that the mission in Iraq was accomplished and, in fact, stated the opposite.

As for your second issue (re: spin), I'm not quite getting it in the context of this particular discussion regarding the speech. Do you mean the spin of victory? Or are you talking about the spin illustrated here today with the benefit of 20/20 hindsight?<g>**

Frankly, political spin gives me a headache....

I think Bush and his crowd are their own worst enemies.
I also think that there are those out there in medialand
who do, in fact, make it their business to undermine Bush as much as possible. So I guess even paranoids do have real enemies.<g>

**I couldn't resist commenting here today because the assessment of the text of the speech this a.m. was not consistent with the usual parsing techniques applied.:-)
