If we weren't a country addicted to oil, our economy would not be subject to the whims of oil prices, our national security would not be at risk forcing us to spend $400B a year on defense and $100B a year on wars like Iraq, and our environment would be much cleaner. If we kicked our oil habit, we'd have a lot more money to spend on health care and education. We'd still have to come up with realistic solutions to those problems, because lack of money isn't the only root cause of those problems, but more money can usually help.
