If anybody thinks Nvidia always makes intelligent decisions they're Nutz...Quad card sli is nutz...Nvidia just wants to sell more high-end cards without regard to overall system cost and a reasonable cost/benefit ratio...I love reading about how the average game console buyer is now rebelling against the sony ps3 because the price is so high and the nintendo Wii is low...there is a limit to how much the average consumer will pay for performance...Content is Still KING...;>)

AMD point of view: AMD/ATYT bodes well for mobile (ATI graphics often use less power than NVIDIA's). AMD/NVIDIA would be better for corporate use (stable drivers, server chips). Traditionally AMD has stronger ties to NVIDIA. NVIDIA did use IBM's SOI process and fab services although not successful. First rumor was that AMD was interested in ATI. AMD might want to copy Intel's platform strategy but can do that without any acquisitions, or also by buying NVIDIA instead. AMD also might want another fab filler to replace flash but can do that without acquisitions, or also by buying NVIDIA instead of ATI.

From Intel's point of view: Intel/ATYT will complete Intel's graphics line, just as much as the combi of Intel/NVIDIA would. Only thing NVIDIA brings additionally to Intel is stable drivers and to some extent compiler software + lead in SLI. Buying NVIDIA robs AMD of a server chip line. Traditionally Intel has had way better relationship with ATI.

Anyways, the drivers for AMD to buy ATI are hardly conclusive from where I stand, and I actually think it might well not be happening just yet.
