I haven't read the book, what I expressed is something I've been thinking about for several years, after reading in the same semester the history of Germany from the Weimar Republic to the Nazis, and the history of America during and after the presidence of Andrew Jackson.

I was struck by what I see as parallels.

Now the more I look around, the more I see it.

But I see it as something organic, especially in countries that have multiple ethnicities.

Even in "enlightened" countries like France and the United States, there are plenty of educated, intelligent people who are full of ethnic hatred, and plenty more uneducated, unintelligent people who are full of ethnic hatred.

That doesn't mean authoritarianism is a good solution, although authoritarians do "make the trains run on time" and otherwise impose order -- at a cost. The cost is unacceptable to me.
