Good points--let me get back to you on the price down here. Was basing my statement on semi-final prices and adding 10 bucks. This for a seat not down by the glass but second tier.

Crude oil was discovered in the US in PA. around 1870 so fairly certain it was being refined by 1893. Just in time for the internal combustion engine to burst on the scene.

Because of no political will down here, so far, to cut spending and raise taxes (with a view to controlling the deficit), the price of crude HAS to rise---demand aside. For this reason I think it is an excellent hedge against what I foresee as a big slide in the dollar's value (absent a political turn around).

We have mutual fund indexes down here in certain fund families (ProFund & Rydex Fund are two) that will let one bet on stock & bond market drops and I'm trying to figure out how much to hedge in this direction.

The other thing I foresee is a possible world wide depression because of the economic engine of the US starting to run on fumes. IF Chindia can develop their internal markets fast enough this may not happen; or if the new T-Secretary Paulson means business & can stop the economy from going over a cliff in time it may not happen. Much, I think, depends, on what happens in the November mid-term elections and the message that gets sent to the pols.

I do wish they would reinstitute a draft down here for this would link the ordinary citizen to government policy--which is why it will probably never happen.

Maybe I should get ready to move to Quadras Island and live on Salmon & berries (G).

<<P.S. Was crude produced back in 1893?>>

... OT, a matter of historical interest ...

Pennsylvania oil was discovered flickr.com@N00/148600448/ in 1859

and Trinidad oil was discovered two years earlier, gstt.org , in 1857

Trinidad and Tobago is now drowning in greenbacks, due to inward investment from USA, Canada, Europe, and China in the just starting to be exploited, enormous, and just-in-time natural gas fields, and our politicians all have their plans in mind businessweek.com "Trinidad to use windfall to raise spending", typical ;0/
