Declining to recite the Pledge is not the same thing as declining to pledge allegiance to the country. Nor does it demonstrate an lack or responsibility that I can see. Nor does it indicate a lack of pride in the country. Reciting the Pledge isn't an accurate proxy for any of those things.

During the first gulf war, Janet and I were eating dinner at a Greek restaurant here in Chicago when someone (the owner?) decided that periodic loud OMPAS weren't enough and that all the patrons should stand and sing God Bless America. Lots of people. Big restaurant.

We continued to sit and eat our dinner. And were very annoyed at the attempted manipulation. And haven't gone back to that restaurant, despite the food having been very good.

Just put me down as OLD FASHIONED. IMHO anyone who feels they are not disposed to Pledge their allegiance to their country needs to find another country. jdn
