It's a little puzzling, why is AMD messing with the 4x4 when they could probably cherrypick a 3.4Ghz DDR2-1000 solution?

Because they can't. Not without blowing the TDP up to >> 150W.

Next part due is a 3GHz (DC) FX, on 90nm, at the end of the year.

What happens if its easier to ratchet up two single cores that kicks ass...then two sockets would look very attractive to buyer and seller...;>)
